Sheep in Wolves’ Clothing

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. ” (Rom.12:2)

I realize that most are likely thinking that I have my image backwards, that it is supposed to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Jesus warned about the dangers posed by those in the world who had an appetite to prey upon God’s people (Matt.7:15-20). Paul used the imagery of wolves among sheep as he warned the bishops of Ephesus about the inevitable onslaught of false teaching (Acts 20:28ff). That those in the service of Satan would attempt to pass themselves off as children of God should come as no surprise to us (2 Cor.11:13-15). We must be vigilant, for the wolves are ever at the door. What may be even more disconcerting, however, is when the sheep begin to dress like the wolves. Too often we forget that we have been saved out of the world, for far too many of the called out are trying to rejoin the world. We don’t want them to know that we are a sheep, so we start talking, walking, and dressing like the world, like we did before we were separated from sin by the blood of Jesus. We allow the world to press us into its mold, shaping us into its image. Christians, let’s refuse the call of this old sin-sick world to rejoin its ranks. Let’s be transformed by turning to the word of God, allowing it to shape us into the image of Jesus. Sheep who wear wolves’ clothing loudly proclaim that they are ashamed of being a Christian. I am not ashamed. I have nothing to hide. I just want to be a sheep!

“Father, we praise you for sending Jesus as the precious Lamb that takes away the sin of the world. Thank you for allowing us to be sheep under the care of the Great Shepherd. May we never be ashamed to live for you. Through Jesus we pray. Amen.”
